“Michael Pollan, on Democracy Now, tells us that the “family meal” is the “nursery of democracy.” And then he goes on: “it’s where we learn and where we teach our children how to share, how to take turns, how to argue without offending, how to learn about the events of the day. I mean, I learned all this at the table. And if kids are spending all their time in their rooms, you know, passing through the kitchen, nuking a frozen pizza, they’re missing something really important.” Now, I don’t know about you, but almost nothing was more horrifying to me as a child than the “family meal.” My parents screaming at one another, screaming at me and my sister. Every meal was another battle: I learned how never to breathe while eating, how to hold everything in, act like this isn’t going on, when will I get away? Will I get away? Can I survive? Is it possible? Maybe I can exist without a body, that’s what I wondered, retreat into my head a certain kind of escape. I’m guessing my experience is just as common, if not more common, than the one Michael Pollan rhapsodizes over, and it strikes me as a certain kind of arrogance, not to mention a deep lack of awareness, when he acts as if the abused kids, the queers, the freaks, those of us who were rarely if ever nurtured at the kitchen table, those of us who fled to our rooms not to eat frozen pizza, but with a mad desire to escape, that somehow we do not exist. Pollan’s invocation of the nuclear family as a model of care actually prevents the kind of communal intimacy and accountability that we all need and desire, that very few of us really experienced at that kitchen table so devoid of nurturing or democracy.”

My First Year as a Woman, by Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace

Reading an emotional, personal story at Cosmo is really annoying. Nice insight though. I look forward to keeping up on Laura’s story.

Laura has legit been one of my favourite singer/songwriters for years, and this was a lovely article (once you get past the first page, it’s all written by Laura and it’s beautiful).

I think it’s just so nice to see such a positive story about trans people in the media. The comment above says that it’s annoying to read it in cosmo - but I’m glad it’s there, where people will read it and it might challenge their preconceptions.

See this picture? This comes from a town in Canada where a 24 pack of water bottles is 104 dollars and formula milk for a baby is priced at 55 dollars a pack. What’s more, a pack of diapers is 95 dollars and one head of lettuce is 26 dollars. Inuit people are starving in a country known for it’s generosity.

If you don’t believe this is true, you can find more images like this here. This is the only grocery store these people have in their small towns, and many people are going hungry & elderly are dying faster.

You’ll send aid to foreign children that are starving, so why won’t you pay a little extra to feed the people in your own country who work hard & still can’t afford the prices for healthy food for their families?

Please have a heart and reblog this photo to raise awareness that even in our own countries people are starving, join the movement and show the government that we won’t sit by and watch people starve.

If you think this will make your blog ugly you’re wrong. Children in a first world country are getting sick & starving, and nobody is even aware it’s happening. You can let people know by reblogging and showing you care. People I am close to, my friends and future in-laws are going through this.

This is what the school-to-prison pipeline looks like. This is how black youth are criminalized.

She was doing a science experiment

She’s being charged as an ADULT

She’s being charged with a FELONY

If this all goes the way the prosecution wants, this young woman will be LEGALLY discriminated against for the rest of her life. No voting, housing discrimination, employment discrimination (as if getting a job while black isn’t hard enough), etc. etc.

Perhaps instead of fighting about who is tougher, Batman or Iron Man, we could spend a little internet rage making sure this young scientist doesn’t go to prison?

I wish that I wasn’t so self conscious about showing emotion(s) that might be construed as angst. Lately when I sit down to write things out, to digest them, to attempt to pull out narrative kicking and squirming and a bit bloody … I get that awkward sort of adolescent embarrassment I once felt reading over obviously tear stained teenage diaries. I’m embarrassed by my sensitivity. By my inability to feel at home. By my refusal to admit I’m struggling and sinking, lacking in purpose, lacking in place. I’m embarrassed by my humanity and by my solitude. I do not want to admit that being alone makes me lonely. I do not want to be viewed as anything less than independent and whole. To admit that I have been let down by too many communities, friends, and lovers to rebuild my heart on my own, is difficult. But harder still is creating a space of vulnerability, pockets of safe space in which to nurture a newfound faith in the good in others, the good in myself. Where do you start when there’s no place to plant your feet?

re-blogging myself because this is today in a nutshell.

This is how I feel every day, these days. Living in Philly makes me really lonely, but I don’t know how to say that to any of my friends.
